Hedgelaying volunteer session

2 March 2024 @ 10:00 am 2:00 pm

Join us for a hedgelaying session! No prior experience is necessary as training will be provided.

Hedgelaying is a very old traditional practice, a way of creating a dense, animal-proof living fence out of a line of trees. Hedges have massive benefits and are a fantastic habitat – they provide winter forage, shelter, they join up green spaces and woodlands as a wildlife corridor, to name but a few. Creating or laying a hedge is a great way to support and give a home to many species of birds and small mammals, insects, and reptiles.

Meet at Horsenden farm for 10am in the hayloft (opposite the toilets). We’ll start with a bit of briefing and conservation talk before heading over to the hedge on Horsenden Lane North.

Tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own billhook, pruning saw, felling/side axe if you have. Ditto for thorn-proof gloves.

Wear sturdy shoes/boots, and dress appropriately for the weather.

Any questions please get in touch at friends@horsenden.org
